Having Sex During Pregnancy

Is Sex During Pregnancy Safe?

Is Sex During Pregnancy Safe?

Is having sex during pregnancy OK? Is there anything I need to worry about? I'd really appreciate if some of you could weigh in on whether it is safe for me to have sex while pregnant.

A little background, I am 24 years old and I'm 4 month pregnant now. This is my first pregnancy. My partner is interested in having sex but I've been holding off. At first I felt so sick I wasn't even interested in having sex. Now I'm feeling better, but I don't want to do anything to hurt my baby.

Any thoughts or advice you have would be really appreciated!

Sex is perfectly safe during pregnany
by: Arrington

Hello,
For everyone out there that is worried about having sex while they are pregnant, don't worry! I teach birthing classes, so I know that this is a huge concern for almost all pregnant couples.

Sex is perfectly safe while you are pregnant unless:
your bag of waters is broken
you aren't having bleeding problems
you haven't had premature labor problems in the past.

There are some important things to know so that sex is comfortable for both parties involved when a woman is pregnant.

First, your desire will vary due to hormone changes, men need to respect that their wife might not be in the mood the same way she was before pregnancy.

You may need to vary positions. As your baby grows, some positions will not be comfortable (flat on your back is not a good idea after your 3rd month of pregnancy).

Bottom line, try to maintain good communication about your desire level as well as which positions are comfortable while you are pregant.

Finally, if your due date is approaching, intercourse may help you go into labor. Semen contains prostaglandins which soften the cervix and help prepare the mother for labor. (Don't worry, it won't put you into labor prematurely if you are having a normal pregnancy.)

Hope this helps! Happy pregnancy,
Arrington
