Communication During Labor

by A Concerned First-Time Mom

Hi everyone,

I will be a first-time Mom and really want a natural birth.

I have a concern regarding communication during labor

I've been asking people who have already given birth about labor and delivery, but I still have questions and don't know what to expect.

I was wondering if anyone could share their experience - I have a specific question.

Is it possible to communicate with others who are present in the room during the hardest part of labor?

I've heard from some people that they were unable to talk to anyone, and it makes me worried that I won't be able to express my needs, etc.

My Mom said she was in a state of shock from pain during the late stages of labor and did not know "where she was".

How likely is it that this will happen to me?

Hi!

It is true that it becomes hard to express your needs during labor.

Since communication during labor can be hard, it is best if you surround yourself with a birthing team that understands your wishes and with whom you can develop a type of "short hand".

Bradley Childbirth classes are great for this because you actually practice a variety of positions and discuss scenarios so that your husband/ partner has much more insight into what you are going thru and how to help you.

The hormones that your body releases makes communication during labor hard. It is hard to think logically. The best way I can describe it is that your body turns inward to focus on the work of delivering your baby.

One of our webpages, Stages of Labor and Delivery (http://www.natural-parenting-advice.com/stages-of-labor-and-delivery.html) describes what your body is working to accomplish during the different stages along with how you will feel and act.

You may also find our webpage about Labor Pain Management helpful as well.

Most first time moms have alot of fear about childbirth and that page will help you understand why and what to do about it!

Hope this helps!
